Hollywood’s Biggest Night – The Oscars 2019

The host-free Academy Awards were full of surprises, laughs, incredible performances, and groundbreaking firsts. At Brickfish, we monitored the event using our social listening platform, Nuvi, to see the conversations in real-time. Surpassing over 3.5 million mentions, it certainly was the biggest night in Hollywood.

Women of Color

One of the overarching themes of the evening was inclusivity, especially for women of color. Regina King and Ruth E. Carter made waves on social. King was the first African American to win best supporting actress. Carter was the first women of color to not only be nominated — but win — best costume design. King’s acceptance speech moved Oprah Winfrey to tears, according to her tweet, which later became one of the most popular tweets from the awards ceremony.

Lady Gaga

From Lady Gaga’s emotional acceptance speech to her dreamy performance with Bradley Cooper, she was center stage in some of the largest conversations on social. Gaga’s acceptance speech, following her win for best original song, was a reminder that success has no timeline, but certainly doesn’t happen overnight. Her duet with Bradley Cooper performed later in the show left fans swooning. Between her heartwarming speech and soulful performance, it is easy to see why Lady Gaga was the most mentioned influencer of the evening. Additionally, ‘Lady Gaga’ and ‘original song’ were two of the top trending keywords according to our Nuvi monitor.

Red Carpet

Although there were sizable conversations surrounding what happened on stage, the largest conversations took place on the red carpet. As stars unveiled their best looks, one stole the show. Billy Porter stunned spectators with his customer couture tuxedo gown by famed designer, Christian Siriano. Porter and Siriano were also two of the top mentioned influencers of the evening.

Final Thoughts

The evening may have lacked a host, but the direction was clear. Fans raved about the awards ceremony on social. From our data, the sentiment was 26% positive, only 4% negative, and the remaining 70% was neutral. Although some were skeptical — the biggest night in Hollywood didn’t disappoint.
