In the ’60s police raids were not uncommon within the LGBTQ+ community. However, one late night in June the community decided they had put up with enough. On June 28, 1969, during the early hours of the morning, the NYPD raided The Stonewall Inn, a local gay bar located in Greenwich Village. The clientele that night (mostly being drag queens and people of color) decided to rebel against the raids, sparking an uprising between the police and the surrounding community of Greenwich Village. A month following the riots the very first NYC Pride Rally transpired in Washington Square Park with over 500 people in attendance. The following year, gay pride marches took place in locations all over the country including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco to commemorate the uprising – the beginning of what we now call Pride Month. This Pride Month will mark the 50th anniversary of the events that unfolded at the Stonewall Inn.
